Putting the Fun back in Fundamental Human Rights !

Everday gets better and better....

I just got back from attending a lecture given my Catherine Mackinnon at the American Center in Kolkata. It was one of the most passionate and heartfelt lectures I have ever heard. For those of you unfamiliar with Catherine Mackinnon (and if you work for TBS you should be ashamed if you dont know her - lol)...allow me to school you....

Here are just a few of her accomplishments....

• Created the phrase Sexual Harassment
• Was the architect of the Violence Against Women Act (VAWA) in the US. The NCADV and TBS have worked closely over the years to reauthorize this bill when it comes up. It's the first AND ONLY legislation addressing violence against women.
• Is a renowned feminist author with several best selling books
• Lawyer
• professor at Michigan State University
• Visiting professor at Harvard

So to say the least she is very qualified to speak on the issues of womens rights around the world and boy does she do an amazing job. She spews fire from the pulpit like a minister. Incredible job! I walked out of there feeling so energized and passionate I could hardly contain myself. She reminded me in many ways of Anita. A ball of fiery passion that you better not dare try to silence. I took alot of notes and will get into the gist of her lecture later on but if you ever get a chance to see her speak or buy her books you must do it. The women kicks serious ass! She opened my eyes to some issues I was unaware of and has forced me to question some assumptions I've had about issues like prostitution and trafficking. LOVE HER!

I'm now getting ready to attend celebrations for the Muslim holiday of Maharram (do yourself a favor and google it). It's a mourning festival for the prophet Mohammed's grandson and I was invited by Shayma and Salma who are going to participate, as they are Muslim. It's a great honor for me to be personally invited by them to observe their culture and religion and visit a Mosque. I cant wait to go. I will give a full report later on.

Susan is back at one of the shelters to finish up some projects we've been working on. You all should see her. She is glowing! I've known Susan for 10 years and I've never seen her so happy and lively. It's awesome!
Thats all for now...gotta go. Please make sure you read all posts. Dont miss a thing! :)
Namaste
